PUEBLO COUNTY, COLO. -- About 1,500 pounds of fresh produce were distributed to students at two Pueblo City Schools as part of Care and Share's first ever mobile food pantry.

Care and Share, a southern Colorado food bank, brought hot deals to students at East High School and Risley Middle School Wednesday afternoon at no charge.

"Sometimes we know that's the only hot meal they get is the one that we give them every day," East High Food Server Loretta Lewis said.

Care and Share officials made sure the pantry was stocked with healthy options for the students.

"The hard thing that was a little bit tough to give away today was the cabbage," Care and Share Program Coordinator Donna Helms said. "We kinda told some of the students 'you're not leaving the line today without a cabbage.' Other than that they were real open to take the different types of produce that we had."

Lewis said the need for extra food is always increasing.

"You can tell by looking at the child when they need it, and they don't want nobody to know it," she said.

The bank hopes to extend the mobile program to other districts soon and will have summer lunch programs for qualified kids.
