COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- This past weekend was 'Stamp Out Hunger' in the U.S., the largest food drive both in the U.S. and in southern Colorado.
Local food banks said with summer drawing closer, there is an increased demand for food donations.
One local bank, Care and Share, has seen a 30 percent increase in demand in 2012.
"The economy might be getting a little better, but there are still a lot of people coming to Care and Share for additional food," Colorado Association of Letter Carriers President Kevin Corcoran said.
The U.S. Postal Service assists food banks every year by picking up donations from folks who don't want to or don't have time to take them to a bank.
"We're not asking them to go across town to a certain location, we just need them to take a few extra steps to their mailbox to donate," Shannon Coker with Care and Share said. "They can go to a post office before they close, they can donate there as well."
Every year Care and Share distributes more than 18 million pounds of food to those in need in the area, and a good chunk come from Stamp Out Hunger.
"Last year we were able to bring in over 80,000 pounds of food," Coker said.
