EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- Dozens of El Paso County residents gathered in downtown Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon for a rally in support of civil unions.
The group urged El Paso County elected officials to extend to same sex couples the protections they said are "needed to care for their families."
Those in attendance waved banners and signs, and called for equal rights.
"Marriage to me is a religious issue, it is intended to be separated from government, civil rights however are being denied to an important segment of our community," Dave Anderson, a candidate for the 5th Congressional District, said.
"Being able to say openly I am committed to my partner and getting recognition, and not having a different space that I have to go to so I am kept separate from everyone else," Eric Austin Church said.
State officials will discuss the issue of civil unions at a special session starting Monday.
