DENVER (AP) -- Democrats say a Colorado civil unions measure that surprisingly cleared a Republican-controlled committee may be in danger if it doesn't get scheduled for a hearing soon.

Republicans who control the scheduling of bills in the House have a 33-32 vote advantage. But enough Republicans support civil unions that if the bill reaches a floor vote, it will pass.

The Legislature adjourns Wednesday so the measure's next committee hearing needs to happen soon.

Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty delivered a speech to lawmakers Friday morning cautioning them not to question others' political motives if they don't like what happens with a bill.

The civil unions bill passed the House Judiciary Committee Thursday on a 6-5 vote, with one Republican joining Democrats.
