Top sergeant major in the Army visits Fort Carson

FORT CARSON, COLO. (AP) -- The top enlisted soldier in the Army is visiting Fort Carson.

Sgt. Major of the Army Raymond F. Chandler will meet with reporters on Thursday.

Sergeants major look after the welfare of noncommissioned officers and enlisted personnel and make recommendations to commanders. It's the highest noncommissioned officer rank in the Army.

Chandler was sworn in as sergeant major of the Army in March 2011. This is his first visit to Fort Carson since then.

He was previously commandant of the Army Sergeants Major Academy.
