COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A partial verdict is in for Joshua Carrier after a week of deliberations.
Jurors in the trial reached a partial conviction Tuesday.
The former Colorado Springs Police officer and assistant wrestling coach at Horace Mann Middle School was facing more than 200 criminal charges.
The courtroom was packed as the verdicts were read.
The judge took his time, going count by count.
In the end, Carrier was found guilty on 21 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
The rest of the more than 200 counts came back either not guilty or no verdict.
Afterwards, Carrier was taken into custody.
"Anytime, especially when you have that many not guilty verdicts, to have your client taken away, it was heart-wrenching for us and his family," Defense Attorney Josh Tolini said. "So we are disappointed with where he is today, but we are looking long-term."
Originally the jury also found Carrier guilty of one count of unlawful sexual contact, but that was changed to a no verdict after one of the jurors changed her mind in the courtroom.
It was a surprising turn of events for everyone involved.
"I have never seen that in my career, to have a juror during polling change their mind," District Attorney Dan May said.
Following the verdict, many of the alleged victims and their parents broke down in tears.
"Going through a trial like this is very difficult, especially on child witnesses," May said. "I had a chance to talk with families briefly following this, and it is extremely tough on them."
"We found him guilty of the sexual exploitation, and comfortably we did that," Jury Foreman Julia said. "There were just some of us that could not agree he was guilty on the other counts."
From here the counts that came back no verdict will be retried.
May said the retrial could take up to another six weeks, but the jury foreman said her team did what they thought was right under the law.
"The most emotional six weeks I have ever had," Julia said.
The judge revoked Carrier's bond following the verdicts.
A bond hearing will be held in two weeks.
