CANON CITY, COLO. -- The City of Canon City has placed Police Chief Duane McNeill on paid administrative leave after morale concerns began to arise in the Canon City Police Department.

City officials will review an internal management audit of the department before determining further action.

Officials requested through the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police in December that an audit be conducted. Of the 50 staff members in the department, 40 were interviewed about the leadership, management and daily administration.

City administrators suspended McNeill after finding issues as a result of the audit that they want to assess further. They said they don't know how long that will take.

Officials said they support the department and are working hard to restore morale.

McNeill has been Chief of Police since December 2009.
