COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers have arrested one person in connection with a potentially explosive device found outside a charter school Thursday morning.
Officers responded to Classical Academy North in the 900 block of Stout Road around 9 a.m. after a suspicious device was found near the school. By the time officers arrived, someone had moved the package to a wooded area southwest of the building.
Officers said an explosives team robot was able to take x-rays and determine the items inside were incendiary. However, officers determined they were safe.
District 20 school officials told FOX21 News the objects under investigation were originally found Monday afternoon, in the main building
"We were fairly certain they were not of immediate concern," Janet Stump, Director of Advancements & Communications for District 20, said.
Once the devices were secured, isolated and deemed "not a danger," officials focused on finding the suspect.
School was closed Tuesday for a snow day, Wednesday district officials were contacted and Thursday upon their inspection, Colorado Springs Police officers were called.
Officers did not release any information about the suspect, only that he or she is under 18 years old. The suspect is charged with possession/use or removal of an explosive or incendiary device and interference with staff or students of an educational facility.
The investigation is ongoing.
