CHAFFEE COUNTY, COLO. -- The Chaffee County Coroner has identified the body of a man who burned to death in a barn southwest of Buena Vista.
The Colorado Department of Corrections contacted Chaffee County Sheriff's deputies after 46-year-old David Butler escaped custody last week.
Officials said they thought he was in the Mount Princeton area south of Buena Vista, and deputies found his truck abandoned on the side of County Road 321. They began to search the area on foot, which is when they found a nearby barn in flames.
Deputies found a body inside, and Monday the coroner confirmed it was Butler's based on dental records. He was wanted for homicide and was said to have "violent tendencies."
Deputies did not say whether or not they thought Butler started the fire himself but will continue the investigation.
