AURORA, COLO. (AP) -- Twelve people being held in Aurora's jail could be deported following a week-long review by federal immigration officials.

The Denver Post reported Friday that authorities screened all 346 inmates looking for illegal immigrants in an operation the U.S. Immigration and Customs agency calls a "surge." Twelve were identified and are now subject to deportation.

Immigrant advocates said they were concerned that agents also reviewed court summonses as part of their review. ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok said none of the 12 was identified through summonses.

The city's court administrator, Zelda DeBoyes, oversees the jail and said the surge is routine.

She said all inmates are asked where they were born when they are booked into the jail and ICE is notified if any immigrants are about to be released.
