CHAFFEE COUNTY, COLO. -- Chaffee County Sheriff's deputies on the hunt for a man who escaped custody ended up finding a body in a burning barn near Buena Vista.
The Chaffee County Sheriff's Office said they were alerted by the Colorado Department of Corrections Fugitive Operations that 46-year-old David Butler was likely in the Mount Princeton area, just south of Buena Vista.
Deputies found an unoccupied pickup truck registered to Butler in a field off County Road 321 and started to search the area, thinking the suspect could be on foot.
Soon officials noticed smoke coming from a small barn nearby and called the fire department.
Firefighters arrived to find the building fully engulfed in flames.
When the fire was finally extinguished firefighters found a charred body inside, burned beyond recognition.
The body has not been identified, but an autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Friday.
Authorities are still searching for Butler, who is wanted on an original charge of homicide and is said to have "violent tendencies."
