COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Summer is coming, and that means time for swimming.

Over the past few years not all of the city-owned pools have been open, drained with the budget.

But now a new proposal is looking to change that.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is currently working on an agreement with the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region to have the organization operate six of the city's pools.

They would include Cottonwood Creek Recreation Center, Portal Pool, Wilson Ranch Pool, the Aquatics and Fitness Center at Memorial Park, Monument Valley Pool and Prospect Lake Beach.

The operating cost for the project is estimated at $425,000.

"We are going to be going in front of city council to present the new partnership next week," Laura Neumann, Chief of Staff, Chief Administrative Officer with the city, said.

Last summer the city was only able to open and operate four pools, many of which were packed on hot days.

"It is a safe place for children and families to swim, and certainly people wanted them open in certain areas of the city," Neumann said.

In the proposal Colorado Springs would still own the pools, but the YMCA would manage and operate them.

"That is something we are a national leader in, and locally were operate more pools than anyone else," Dan Dummermuth, President and CEO of the YMCA, said.

Dummermuth said the YMCA feels a social responsibility to help get the pools up and running and added they build community.

"When most of us were kids we walked or rode our bikes to the pool, we went as families, and that is not taking place right now," Dummermuth said.

If you are wondering how memberships would work, the city and the YMCA have an idea in mind.

"We are looking at a reciprocal type membership as far as if you belong to the recreation centers you can utilize our YMCAs that we have right now, and vice versa," Dummermuth said.

The YMCA does provide financial assistance to those who qualify.

If approved, the agreement would also bring around 80-90 new jobs to the area.

City council is scheduled to vote on the funding to support the proposal at their formal meeting next week.
