COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers have now obtained a warrant for the arrest of a man who killed a pedestrian while driving in the city Tuesday, a case originally believed not to be criminal.
According to officers, 32-year-old Michael Benton allegedly hit a parked car in the 1400 block of South Nevada Avenue around 9:01 a.m. The parked car then hit a van, where two men were unloading tools. Both men were pinned between the van and parked car and had to be removed by fire crews.
One of the men, 46-year-old Mark Meschelle, died from his injuries.
Original reports said Benton was a passenger in the car and that a female had swerved to avoid a truck that was driving erratically, but investigators have determined that is not the case. They have since obtained the warrant for Benton's arrest, determining Benton was the driver.
Officers think Benton may be staying at a local hotel and may be driving a white Dodge Neon. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact police at (719) 444-7000.
