DENVER (AP) -- Marijuana activists are going to have to try again to see a ballot measure on recreational pot use.

The Colorado Secretary of State announced Friday that a legalization measure proposed for November ballots did not meet the required threshold because too many of the signatures were invalid.

The ballot measure would have asked whether adults over 21 should be able to possess small amounts of pot without a doctor's recommendation.

Activists who proposed the measure have 15 days to collect an additional 3,000 valid signatures.

Marijuana legalization in Washington state appears headed toward ballots.
