COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The winter storm continues to affect the region this Friday morning. After a lull in snowfall overnight, light snow and blowing snow has taken over.
Northerly winds have become strong this morning, allowing for the blowing snow and reduced visibilities. Roads became icy Thursday night, and additional snow and blowing snow has only made roads worse. Most, if not all, roads along the Palmer Divide have been closed due to the adverse conditions, including Highway 24 east of Colorado Springs into Limon. For the latest on road conditions, check out CDOT's website.
Heavy additional snowfall accumulation will be possible north of Baptist Road. So far, accumulations have been under a foot in Monument, but over 14 inches has been reported in places like Ellicott and Calhan. Drifting snow will be especially problematic as winds will likely increase in these area through the morning.
By this afternoon, the sn ow will likely let up, allowing for cold and windy conditions to persist. Wind chills will stay in the teens. There could be a few leftover flurries overnight. The snow will decrease from west to east.
Through all of this, the mountain areas will not see much additional accumulation. The plains, however, especially north of Highway 50, could see accumulations up to a foot or more!
**UPDATE: 8:15am
Many roads have been closed in Eastern Colorado including US 287 and US 40. Blizzard conditions have set in to the north and east of Colorado Springs. The storm is slowly moving east. Expect very slowly improving conditions through the rest of the afternoon.
