COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach officially removed the interim tag from acting Police Chief Peter Carey's title, making him the permanent chief for the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Carey was sworn in Tuesday at a city council meeting. He had been acting as interim chief since former chief Richard Myers announced his retirement Oct. 3.
Carey was named deputy chief back in January of 2008 and began his law enforcement career with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in 1982.
He has held a variety of supervisory positions in the Patrol Bureau, Metro Vice and the Major Crimes Unit, among others.
Carey earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia and then a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
"Chief Carey has demonstrated flexibility, vision and leadership in the challenging role of interim chief,” Bach said in a statement. "We are confident in his substantial abilities and look forward to working with him in the important work of keeping Colorado Springs one of the safest large cities in America."
