COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The burnt shell of a mobile home is all that's left after a fire cuts through the unit.
Stratmoor Hill firefighters got the call around 9:30 a.m. for the 1200 block of Denise Drive, but when they arrived flames could be seen shooting through the windows.
"It's gone. The house burned down to the ground and there's nothing left," homeowner Preston Taylor said.
Crews had to move quickly on this one because of the wind and force of the fire.
But firefighters faced a rare water problem, as fire hydrants malfunctioned and flooded the corner.
Assistant Fire Chief for Stratmoor Hills Fire Department Mark Parker said, "We had a couple hydrants that were non-function so we had to go further out to find one that worked."
Neighbors were evacuated as crews worked to contain it.
Taylor's wife and their 3-year-old child, who were home at the time, managed to make it out safely but left with only the clothes on their backs.
"By the time they got out and turned around to at least grab her phone it was too late and already taken over the whole living room. There wasn't any going back in there," Taylor said.
It appears the fire started at or near the fireplace, but fire fighters haven't been able to pinpoint it
Typically, mobile home fires burn fast, and it's difficult to track down a direct origin.
The home is a total loss, and the Red Cross is helping the family displaced by the fire.
The homeowner does not have insurance.
A fire watch is in place for the mobile home for the rest of Wednesday night. Firefighters want to keep an eye on the property because the partial roof collapse means there's still some hot spots that could flare back up.
