PUEBLO, COLO. -- Extra security officers were on hand to handle an on-time dismissal of two Pueblo City Schools Tuesday after they had been locked down for the majority of the day as a precaution.
Pueblo Police officers locked down all city schools around 9:10 a.m. after a potentially suicidal woman fled officers when they tried responding to her in the 2600 block of Lucas Avenue. The woman was in a black SUV, allegedly with a gun, and drove away when she saw officers approaching.
The woman had been in phone contact with a school resource officer at Central High School, where her son goes. The officer told her to stop for officers trying to contact her, but she refused.
She agreed to meet the patrol Watch Commander at a convenience store but was seen stopping by a house to give a man the gun first. During her meeting, she told the commander she was not suicidal and refused to see medical officials. She drove away and was last seen on northbound I-25.
Officers said all but the two schools where her children attend, Central and Heritage Elementary, were taken off lockdown after a few hours. The other schools remained locked down until the end of the school day as a precaution.
