BOONE, COLO. -- Animal Law Enforcement officers with Pueblo Animal Services (PAS) seized more than 60 animals Friday who were living in conditions that one PAS employee said were among the worst he had ever seen.

PAS officials said three horses were dead when they conducted a search warrant at Valerie Harris' property Friday, and more than 60 animals were living in deplorable conditions.

Officials said more than 30 horses, donkeys and mules, 31 dogs, a cat and a llama were seized and are receiving care at a shelter and livestock facility.

"We found three deceased horses, and the remaining living animals were taken into protective custody due deplorable conditions that were among the worst I have ever seen," Joe Stafford, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region’s Director of Animal Law Enforcement, said. "There were starving and emaciated animals scattered throughout the property living in unimaginable circumstances."

Harris was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Harris also has previous convictions for cruelty to animals after 19 horses were taken from the same property in 2007. In 2009, two neglected dogs were seized.

Stafford said the cost of providing care for these animals could be $20,000 or more over the next several months and are asking for donations to help. You can donate by clicking here.
