COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Two women from People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) were seen downtown Colorado Springs Thursday afternoon in nothing but bikinis made with lettuce, trying to promote a healthy lifestyle in 2012.
The "Lettuce Ladies" handed out free soy sausages and copies of PETA's vegan/vegetarian starter kit to people on Tejon Street Thursday. They said it's all to promote the well-being of people, the planet and animals, as well as to offset some of the holiday weight gain.
PETA officials said meat eaters are more susceptible to heart diseases, strokes, diabetes, cancer and obesity. They also cite the meat industry as the number one source for greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
"Turning over a new leaf doesn't have to be difficult," PETA Lettuce Lady Hayden Hamilton said in a statement. "With an abundance of delicious vegan choices now available, there's never been a better time to make the switch to a kinder, gentler, healthier diet."
