Icy road may have contributed to fatal crash

CANON CITY, COLO. -- The wicked winter weather and icy roadways have already claimed a life.

The Colorado State Patrol said troopers from Florence and Buena Vista were called out to the crash Monday just before 6 p.m. on Highway 50 west of Canon City

Officials said an SUV was taking a right hand curve when the driver lost control.

The car crashed into a rock embankment and rolled, partially ejecting the driver.

The driver, 26-year-old Jack Murten, sustained fatal injuries.

At the time of the crash the road was wet and icy with a thin layer of snow on it, Murten was not wearing a seat belt.

Alcohol is not being considered a factor in the crash.

Troopers are urging people to drive with caution and always wear a seat belt.
