DENVER (AP) -- Colorado health officials say the state needs fewer doctors than predicted despite a flood of new patients under new insurance laws.

The Colorado Health Institute says more than 500,000 residents will become insured under new federal programs, but many of those patients will be shifting from using emergency rooms to family doctors.

According to the Denver Post, the report says Colorado will only need about 140 new doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to cover the added patients by 2016.

The institute is an advocate nonprofit for health care based in Denver.
