COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A family of four has been displaced after a fire destroyed their Colorado Springs home late Tuesday morning.

Firefighters got a call around 11:29 a.m. about a house in the 5100 block of Luster Drive southwest of the Powers Boulevard/Dublin Boulevard intersection in the northeast part of the city.

The father and his son were home at the time but were able to escape uninjured before the three-story house caught fire.

Officials said homes on either side don't appear to be impacted.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.

This is the latest in a string of fires to displace a family right before Christmas, and while investigators are still trying to determine the cause, this fire has people thinking about their safety.

"We were getting ready to put the tree up and the lights. Before we always have like 4-5 different plugs into one outlet and we really have to pay attention to that this time," Bill Massey, of Colorado Springs, said.

When it comes to decorating the tree, make sure you replace your lights every 5-6 years and check the cords for frays.

If you buy a natural tree, make sure it's watered regularly. They can dry out very quickly and that combined with hot lights can make for a dangerous situation.

For all of you who use the fireplace to stay warm, clean out the chimney, and make sure the flue is open.

The buildup can cause a combustible situation.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department has received several calls with homes filled with smoke.

"A chimney sweep is a $100-$150 as opposed to having to replace your home. It's a small investment to make sure everything's safe," Sunny Smaldino, spokeswoman for the Colorado Springs Fire Department, said.

Speaking of small things that can make a serious impact, treat your space heater like it's a working fire.

Keep paper, bedding, children and pets away from them.
