DENVER (AP) -- Gov. John Hickenlooper made a mistake in seeking people to fill a vacancy on the University of Colorado Board of Regents.

Last month, Hickenlooper announced that he was looking for a Democrat or an unaffiliated voter to fill the seat being vacated by Monisha Merchant, who resigned to work for Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet. Hickenlooper's office later found out that Republicans were also eligible for the seat but never issued a notice of the change.

The Denver Post (http://bit.ly/vKMnqA ) reported Friday that one Republican, Patricia Hayes, switch her registration to unaffiliated so she could apply. She lost out to Irene Griego, a Democrat from Jefferson County.

The mix-up annoyed Hayes but she's not sure if she'll switch her affiliation back. She says she's not happy with either party right now.
