COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Every day it seems like the price of something is going up. Whether it be the cost of gas, food or even stamps, it can be difficult to afford everyday necessities.

Thankfully, there are coupons to help us save a dollar or two. With the help of technology, there are also several kinds of digital coupons available, including hundreds that you can download on your smartphone.

But which is better: coupon clipping or coupon clicking?

According to technology expert Tonya Hall, radio host of The Tonya Hall Show, paper coupons may soon be replaced by mobile coupons.

"For a manufacturer to print coupons and get them out there," she said, "from a manufacturer standpoint, I think that is something that will eventually go away."

Here are a few recommended mobile coupon apps and websites:

Most of the coupon apps are available to download on every smartphone, and many are free. Hall said mobile coupon apps provide not only additional savings but can also be tailored to the consumer.

"There are so many that offer different things," Hall said. "It just depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Many are location-based so you're getting what you need right when you need it. You're not checking the paper or magazines, you're searching for an ad or a coupon as you need it."

Hall said apps like FourSquare, which requires the user to "check-in" at locations to earn coupons, offer great savings and help the consumer be interactive with their favorite stores, restaurants or shopping center.

"It's really good for the business owner because he or she is getting you into their store to take advantage of special offers they may only be offering that day," Hall said. "What I think the advantage to the consumer is, you're getting really relevant ads that are relevant to you."

While most of the coupon apps are free, sometimes you have to spend money to save money.

"Some of the best rated apps are the ones that cost $1 or $1.99," Hall said. "It might be worth the investment."

However, Hall said not to throw out your paper coupons just yet. Like most technology, there are a few kinks that need to be worked out before all coupons are paperless.

"There is still a lot that has to be done," Hall said. "Many apps offer national and local coupons instead of just offering those that are near you. Sometimes they can be difficult to navigate. That's why websites like Springs Bargains, which offers coupons for places in Colorado Springs, are really successful."

So, when it comes down to it, Hall suggests being both a coupon clipper and a coupon clicker.

"I think you want to do both," she said. "You want to hit all bases."
