DENVER (AP) -- A wave of abuse against the elderly has advocates pushing for mandatory reporting.

Crimes against the elderly reported last year included financial crimes, as well as physical and sexual abuse.

The American Bar Association's Commission on Law and Aging says Colorado is one of four states that do not require social workers, physicians and other caregivers to report suspected elder abuse to police or adult protective services.

According to the Denver Post, opponents say the law would result in bigger caseloads for an already-overloaded adult protection program. Caregivers are worried that they may be unfairly accused of crimes they did not commit.
