COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Many of the patients at Memorial Hospital for Children won't be able to trick or treat this year, but Spirit Halloween made sure they'll still be able to celebrate the spooky holiday.
Tuesday, the store had their annual Spirit of Children Halloween party at the hospital, letting the children decorate pumpkins, get their face painted and even take a few costumes each to keep.
"Each of the kids gets to pick out several different costumes to take home with them as well as their siblings," Kimberly Gearhart, a Spirit Halloween manager, said. "We leave everything we bring for the hospitals, so if there's kids who come in after we leave, they get to pick out the same items these kids get to pick as well. We'll leave about 40 to 50 costumes for the kids in addition to the ones they get to take home with them."
It wasn't just the kids' spirits who were lifted. Many parents said they were glad to have a little normalcy added to the day.
Trinity, who didn't want to give her last name, is a nurse in the NICU unit. Just recently, her second child had to be placed in the same unit.
"That's where my son is now. He was born eight weeks early, so it's good and bad because I know more than I should, but I also know enough: what to worry about, what not to worry about," Trinity said.
Her 2-year-old daughter was there to take part in the party.
"I feel better, like I'm bouncing back and forth between the two of them, so this is something fun for her to do, and not all the focus is on the baby," she said.
One of the hospital's nurses, Erika Radcliff, wanted her shy patient to get in on the fun.
While getting her face painted, Radcliff said, "One of the great things about Memorial is the fact that we can put these things on for our community and our kids, and so it's something that really makes me happy and proud to work at Memorial."
So far, Spirit of Children has donated $40,000 to Memorial Hospital for Children.
