GOLDEN, COLO. (AP) -- Jefferson County sheriff's officials say an inmate has been shot by a deputy after he tried to escape while being treated at a medical facility.
Authorities say the inmate was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. His name hasn't been released.
Witnesses told KMGH-TV in Denver that the inmate was getting an MRI Tuesday in Golden, within a mile of the county jail, when he ran off. Witnesses say he was shot as he ran toward a door.
A spokesman for Golden police confirms the inmate's shackles had been removed for the medical treatment.
