COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Samantha Salaz, the woman who pleaded guilty to watching her aunt attempt to drown her baby daughter, was sentenced to 24 years in prison Friday.
The 19-year-old Salaz and her aunt, 51-year-old Mary Horsley, were originally accused of trying to drown Salaz's then 20-month-old daughter in a toilet in early April, though investigators later learned it was a shower.
Both were charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse. The baby survived.
Salaz pleaded guilty in an agreement to testify against Horsley Aug. 3. As a result of the agreement, Salaz's maximum sentence Friday would have only been 28 years.
According to investigators, Horsley put Salaz's daughter was in a cold shower with tape over her eyes and mouth and tried drowning her while Salaz watched.
Documents also showed Horsley had been raising two grandchildren of her own
