COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- One Colorado man is walking across the state to raise awareness and funds for disabled veterans.
On Sept. 1, 59-year-old Ben Cordova began the 374 mile journey from the Wyoming border. Each day, Cordova walks about 10 miles in hopes that no one else will have to walk a mile in his shoes.
"What I'm doing is trying to avoid the younger generation of veterans or active duty to go through the problems that we had as Vietnam veterans," Cordova said.
Cordova is a disabled veteran himself. He suffers from multiple health issues as a result of exposure to the chemical Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
Yet he is not letting that slow him down.
"When my specialist told me I could reverse the damages from my neuropathy," he said, "it basically gave me a green light to do something I've wanted to do all my life."
With a cane, or sometimes a walker, Cordova is beating the odds as he walks across Colorado. His journey brought him to Fort Carson Thursday morning, where he was presented with a Garrison coin to thank him for his service. Cordova said it is that kind of support that keeps him taking steps with pride.
"As I walk, people honk their horns for support," he said. "It gives you a burst of energy to keep going."
Cordova will need that energy as this "short walk" is just the beginning.
"In February, I start 'My Long Walk,'' he said, "which is when I walk from San Diego to D.C."
Cordova expects to finish his walk through Colorado by Oct. 25 and encourages anyone to join him.
