EL PASO, TEXAS -- A Colorado Springs man was arrested in El Paso, Texas Friday night after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found 473 pounds of marijuana in his car.
Officers working at the El Paso port of entry seized the drugs around 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Bridge of Americas international crossing.
The driver, 35-year-old Robert Anthony, was arrested on drug smuggling charges.
A drug sniffing dog alerted officers to the roof of Anthony's 1995 Chevrolet van while his car was in line at the primary inspection booth. Officers found a hidden compartment in the ceiling with 430 bundles of marijuana inside.
CBP Officers also seized 481 additional pounds of marijuana and 4.8 pounds of heroin in five additional busts over the weekend.
“CBP officers are working hard everyday to stop the flow of illegal drugs and other dangerous things and dangerous people from entering the U.S.,” Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Port Director, said in a statement. “Officer expertise, canines and various tools and technology all play a role in our inspection process.”
