DENVER (AP) -- Comcast says it will be providing low-income families in Colorado with Internet access and laptops at reduced prices to try to close what the company calls a "digital divide."
Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said during the program's announcement Wednesday that ensuring that low-income children have Internet access is crucial to help them succeed.
Comcast's initiative will allow families with children who qualify for free school lunch to have Internet at $10 per month and laptops for $150. The program called Internet Essentials will also provide free courses on how to protect children when they're online.
Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen says not having Internet access exacerbates differences between wealthy and low-income communities. Comcast has made the program available in 39 states.
