COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Several officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department were honored Wednesday during CSPD's annual Medal of Valor Luncheon at the Broadmoor Hotel in the city.
Six officers were given the Distinguished Service Award, and one was awarded the Medal of Valor.
A civilian was also recognized with a Medal of Distinction.
The police department said in order to receive an award, an officer must display heroism, courage and initiative above and beyond the call of duty while protecting the citizens and businesses of Colorado Springs.
"We put our officers out there to do the work that no one else can do, and I think once in awhile you have to stop and thank them for that," Springs Police Chief Richard Myers said.
The highest honor of the day, the Medal of Valor, was awarded to officer Troy Puga.
In December 2009, Puga stopped a man who was firing gunshots into a crowd at a downtown nightclub.
"Even though we single out some individual officers today for some amazing acts, it also represents what all our men and women are out there doing everyday," Myers said.
