PUEBLO, COLO. -- Pueblo Police officers arrested a man and a woman after finding more than 220 pounds of cocaine in the trunk of their car during a traffic stop on I-25 Sunday morning.

An officer pulled 37-year-old Mark Bailey over near mile marker 109 on the interstate after an off-duty detective reported a lane change violation. Both Bailey and 35-year-old passenger Lisa Calderon are from Sylmar, Calif. and said they were going to Iowa to visit Calderon's brother.

However, Calderon told officers she didn't know where in Iowa they were going, and the officer found out the car was a rental and Bailey's license had been revoked.

"Then as he talked to them their stories just weren't matching up," Deputy Chief of Investigations Andy McLachlan with the Pueblo Police Department said.

According to officers, Calderon looked nervous and said she didn't have travel bags because she often wears the same clothes multiple days in a row and would be going back to California shortly after the trip to Iowa.

Bailey told the officer he owned a body shop in California and was driving to Iowa to look at a car.

The officer called for a K9 unit because he thought the two may have been lying based on their conflicting stories. He also noticed the rear of the Chevy Malibu was sitting lower than the front.

The K9 unit found the cocaine in four black duffle bags in the trunk of the car.

Bailey was arrested for driving under suspension, not having insurance and possession of a schedule 2 substance. Calderon was also arrested for possession.

Officers said the 220 pounds of cocaine is worth about $10 million on the street.

Police said they didn't think the drugs were going to be distributed in Pueblo and they were heading for somewhere else.

"I-25 is a drug corridor. It comes out of New Mexico down Mexico way and works its way north," McLachlan said.

McLachlan said Pueblo has seen an increase in drug activity, but he attributes it to a more aggressive approach to a drug problem.

McLachlan said regardless of where the drugs were headed, he's proud of his officers for getting them off the streets.

"That is a huge impact for that town, especially if it was a midsize town. Even a major city, 100 kilos of cocaine is a lot of cocaine on the street," he said.
