FALCON, COLO. -- Changes could be coming to Falcon School District 49, specifically The Falcon Innovation Zone.
D-49 is proposing moving to a four-day school week for the 2012-2013 school year.
It is all part of their Innovation Plan, which is currently taking shape in the district.
If changed, the four-day school week would only apply to schools that are in the Falcon Innovation Zone. They include Falcon High School, Falcon Middle School, Falcon Elementary, Meridian Ranch Elementary, and Woodmen Hills Elementary.
District 49 held a meeting Tuesday night at Falcon High School to discuss with parents several innovation plans, including the four-day school week.
If approved, the calendar option would not reduce the amount of instruction students receive over the course of the school year.
Officials said to make up the difference, students would be in class 50 minutes more per day.
They said the switch would help the district save money, and balance their budget which continues to lose state funding.
Dozens of parents turned out for the meeting to learn more, and share their thoughts.
"More than anything else it is a cost-saving measure, money does matter," Mark Carara, Assistant Superintendent of Innovation, said. "We have had a lot of reductions in our zone and buildings the last two years, and we are looking for ways to save money and not cut staff."
Some parents agreed.
"Not only are we having issues with overcrowding, now we are having issues with children roaming," parent Sharon Mason said. "So if we do not have the support through our schools, then what are we going to do with our kids."
Carara said the district will not move forward on the four-day school week without the support of both staff members and the community.
D-49 is scheduled to take a vote in late September on the proposal.
