Police catch suspected copper thieves

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officer have arrested two suspects who may be responsible for a string of burglaries.

As part of an ongoing investigation, members of the Scrap Metal Theft Task Force were conducting surveillance Tuesday afternoon in the 1100 block of Richards Avenue near Cheyenne Road.

During their surveillance the officers saw two suspects break into a home.

Officers were able to take a woman into custody, but the man ran off into an adjacent neighborhood.

He was eventually found hiding in a maggot-infested garbage can.

Matthew Porter and Wendi Grasso were both booked for numerous charges, including multiple counts of burglary.

Police think they may be responsible for the theft of copper pipe from as many as 10 homes each week over the course of the past year.
