CARBON COUNTY, WYO. -- A woman from Colorado Springs and her three children died in a crash in Wyoming early Tuesday morning after their car was washed out on Highway 130.
According to Wyoming State troopers, Alex Constantinides drove his car into a washed out portion of the road. The road was washed out because of flooding at Brush Creek near Ryan Park.
Alex, his wife Laurel and their three daughters - Zoey, Lucia and Hanna - had been camping at North Brush Creek Campground when the storm hit. Carbon County authorities began evacuating campgrounds in the area, and Alex packed up the campsite and was on the road about 30 minutes later.
Alex hit the washed out portion of Highway 130 while going eastbound around mile marker 55. The white VW van was washed about 75 yards downstream in Brush Creek between 1:15 and 1:40 a.m.
Alex was able to get out of the car and managed to assist an official from the Carbon County Emergency Management team, who also drove into the washed out portion of the highway while trying to evacuate campers.
Troopers said rain began around 7 p.m. Monday and blocked large culverts that ran under the road, causing it to weaken.
Alex's wife and three daughters all died.
Troopers said the water was about 25-30 feet wide and nine feet deep.
Hanna was 8 years old, Zoey was 5 and Lucia was 2. All three were wearing child restraints at the time of the crash.
