COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Department of Defense has announced the death of a Fort Carson soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Officals with the DOD said 40-year-old Sgt. Lex L. Lewis of Rapid City, S.D. was killed July 15 in Afghanistan when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.

They said Lewis was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

According to the Mountain Post, Lewis joined the Army in 1999 and was on his third deployment.

He previously served in Iraq in 2003 and 2004, and again in 2008 and 2009.

Lewis' decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, and two Meritorious Unit Citations.
