COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A man was seriously injured after falling 50 to 100 feet while hiking near Silver Cascade Falls in Cheyenne Canon Saturday morning.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department's High Angle Rescue Team was called in to help the 37-year-old to safety after he slipped and fell while wandering off the trail.

Authorities said he injured his head and leg.

They said it is important for hikers to remember the trails are there for safety.

"With such high angles here if you are off the trail it is going to be really dangerous, even if you think it is going to be safe, you do not know what is below you," Lt. Michael Archuleta with CSFD said.

Archuleta said the man is lucky to be alive because most falls of 100 feet or more end in a fatality.
