COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The City of Colorado Springs is preparing to deal with a local safety hazard brought on by drought conditions.
The city is going to start chopping down trees, most of them more than a century old.
The trees in downtown medians are dead or dying from drought or drought-related diseases.
Officials said the trees are safety hazards because they can be toppled by high winds and attract bark beetles.
Removal of the trees will begin next week.
