COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The boyfriend of a mother who's daughter died as a result of child abuse has been released because there is not enough evidence to charge him.
Jonathan Howell was released Monday after being non-formally charged with first degree murder, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Howell had allegedly killed 2-year-old Isasayen "Isa" Romero. He can be re-arrested if more evidence becomes available.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office confirmed Romero died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen
Howell lived with his girlfriend (Romero's mother) and one other child on Marion Drive near Circle Drive in Colorado Springs. The mother is not a suspect as of now, but the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators said they need more time to complete the testing.
"The case is just not at the point where it needs to be to file charges; we are still working it and still investigating" Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeff Lindsey said in a statement.
