CANON CITY, COLO. -- Canon City Police said the shooting on Elizabeth Street Sunday night is an apparent murder-suicide.

Police said two people died, and witnesses are reporting one man shot the other before shooting himself.

"There was one individual that had at least two gunshot wounds, and there was one individual who was deceased from a single gunshot wound," Capt. Allen Cooper with the Canon City Police Department said.

According to police, 51-year-old Dennis Abraham shot 32-year-old Leo Pewitt twice, once in the chest and once in the leg around 5:35 p.m. Sunday.

Pewitt died at Penrose Hospital.

Abraham allegedly shot himself after shooting Pewitt.

Police said the shooting appears to be the result of a long-standing neighborhood dispute.

"The information that we have is that it was a dispute over some barking dogs and also some violations of the policies of the renter agreements for the trailer park," Cooper said.

Cooper said Canon City has on average one homicide a year, but this one is unusual.

"To my knowledge this is the first time since I've been an officer that we've had a homicide over a neighborhood dispute," Cooper said.

Police said they aren't sure how long the two were neighbors, but they could only find one documented case of a complaint between the two.

"That's one of the things that we determined in our investigation is, although it was a long-standing dispute between these two individuals, nobody called the police until the eleventh hour, fifty ninth minute," Cooper said.

Cooper said it's important to call police before any disputes get out of hand.

"If you're having a dispute, and you think it's gonna get to this level, even as a remote possibility, call the police," he said.

The Fremont County Coroner's Office is yet to confirm the cause or manner of death.
