TRINIDAD, COLO. -- The Bear fire burning in Las Animas County near the New Mexico border is 50 percent contained as of Friday morning.
Officials said despite high winds, the area saw cooler temperatures and cloud cover, allowing firefighters to keep the fire from growing.
The fire is still about 6,885 acres but did not spread Thursday. The fire burning in the Purgatoire River Canyon is about 6,140 acres and is now about 75 percent contained. That fire is in the canyon, but officials are still warning residents to be aware of the fire spreading.
The public is still being asked to stay away from the area.
Crews working on the fires is now about 300, down 100 from Thursday.
The large amount of smoke seen throughout Colorado is coming from wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico, not from these fires.
