COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs police said as of 2:44 p.m. Thursday, some 911 calls coming from cell phones and computers are not making it through to dispatchers.
The problem is intermittent according to police, with callers reporting getting a busy signal despite emergency lines being open for calls.
Police said the problem does not appear to be with the Communications Center, but they are working with Qwest and AT&T Mobility to find the cause of the issue.
911 calls are not ever supposed to go to a busy signal. If lined are full, 911 callers from Colorado Springs are first rerouted automatically to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, then to the Fountain Police Department.
Supposedly only wireless and voice over Internet calls are having problems, and emergency call-takers do not know a call has been attempted.
Police are asking anyone who tries to call 911 and receives a busy signal to immediately call 444-7000 for emergencies. Normally this is a non-emergency number, but dispatchers will be making sure the lines are answered as quickly as possible.
Anyone who hears a ring tone when calling 911 should stay on the line. It means the call has gone through, but it may take a moment for someone to pick up.
