TRINIDAD, COLO. -- The two wildfires that have been burning near the New Mexico border have burned more than 13,000 acres and are spreading due to high winds and dry conditions.
The Bear Fire has burned about 6,885 acres, and all but 324 of those acres have been in Colorado. The fire is burning on Horseshoe and Barela Mesas and is only about 15 percent contained as of Wednesday.
The Purgatoire Fire has grown to about 6,140 acres and is about 10 percent contained.
Crews from both Colorado and New Mexico continue to work the fires.
About 400 firefighters, including 15 engines, nine Type 1 hotshot crews, eight Type 2 hand crews, five bulldozers and four helicopters are working to put out the fires.
Cooler temperatures and possible rain along the border Wednesday may help crews as they work to contain the fires.
There still are no evacuations in place, but several structures may be threatened if the fire spreads further. Officials are asking the public to stay away from the area if they are not residents.
The Purgatoire fire is currently confined to steep terrain in the canyon, but officials are warning residents to be aware of the fire in case it spreads.
