MONUMENT, COLO. -- A man on trial for first degree murder said he was protecting his father when he shot a tire store employee seven times.

In opening statements Thursday the attorney for 19-year-old Logan McClelland said the young man made a split second decision and argued that "Big-O-Tires" employee Bradley Blehm had been drinking and threatened to kill the defendant's father.

Blehm died from multiple gunshot wounds after a dispute outside of the store in Monument last August.

Prosecutors argue that the confrontation didn't escalate beyond an argument and that McClelland didn't have to shoot.
