COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- El Paso County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a domestic violence case after a man allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, stole a car and crashed it after fleeing deputies, all while under the influence of alcohol.
Deputies have charges pending against 29-year-old Garrett Riddle, who is still at Memorial Hospital following the crash.
Around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, Riddle's girlfriend, a 26-year-old, called deputies and said there was a domestic violence at her house. She told deputies not to call her back, and she hung up.
Deputies arrived at the house in the 1000 block of Lindstrom Drive in Colorado Springs four minutes later and found Riddle sitting in the driver's seat of a PT cruiser. One of the deputies knocked on the window of the car and asked Riddle to get out, but he refused.
Riddle sped out of the driveway out of the driveway and headed for Powers Boulevard. Once on Powers, Riddle got up to 80 mph, and deputies stopped the pursuit.
About 20 seconds later, deputies saw a crash at Powers and Milton Proby Parkway at the entrance to the Colorado Springs Airport. Riddle had crashed into a truck, and both he and the truck's 50-year-old driver were taken to the hospital.
Riddle's girlfriend said he had assaulted her and stolen the car.
Deputies will arrest Riddle when he gets out of the hospital and charge him with domestic violence/third degree assault, harassment, motor vehicle theft, DUI, vehicular eluding and vehicular assault.
Riddle also has an outstanding domestic violence/harassment summons and a misdemeanor drug warrant.
