COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- There were tense moments at a local elementary school when a suspect fleeing police ran through the building Wednesday.

Colorado Springs police said they started getting phone calls around 11:30 a.m. about suspicious-looking men casing the neighborhood looking to burglarize a home. The two suspects were identified as 27-year-old Zachery Patterson and 33-year-old Danielle Burke.  While checking the area police saw Burke, but he fled, running through yards.

Then, James Madison Elementary School called police about an unauthorized man running through their property.  The school went into lockdown and 'shelter in place' until school let out at 2:30 p.m.

"[My mother] like freaked out and was like 'they're on lockdown you have to go over there,'" Maggie Rolla, Madison Elementary parent, said.

Officers flooded the area and saw a man running out of the school and to the north. He was later identified as Patterson and arrested.

"We're definitely going to figure out how that person got into the building, it has a buzzer system, all the doors should have locked, and no one should be able to run in," Elaine Naleski, Colorado Springs School District 11 Director of Communications, said.

School officials think the suspect ran through a propped door, and officials said there will be a meeting with teachers to remind them of security procedures.

"There was some erroneous information that went out, that the person was armed and shots fired, that was erroneous,"Sgt. Steve Noblitt with the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

While Patterson was taken into custody, a homeowner on the 2200 block of Stratford Lane called CSPD about a mysterious car parked in their driveway.  The car had stolen plates and belonged to Patterson.  He's facing charges of obstruction, interfering with a school and stolen plates.

A third man was detained for questioning after seen walking in the area of Constitution and Murray. He was later released and is not facing any charges.

Burke is still on the run and wanted for obstruction charges.
