LAS ANIMAS, COLO. -- A man died after driving his car off the road, across a maintenance road and into a canal in southeast Colorado Thursday afternoon.
Colorado State Patrol officials said 56-year-old Robert Bone was driving a 1984 Ford F150 pickup truck east on Canal Road near Las Animas, Colo. around 2:44 p.m. when the car drifted off the left side of the road, across a maintenance road running parallel to Canal Road and into the Fort Lyon Canal.
Bone was not wearing his seatbelt and died when the car flipped on its top in the water.
The passenger, 55-year-old Kathy Bone, was wearing her seatbelt and suffered minor injuries.
The Bones were from La Junta, Colo.
Troopers said they are investigating alcohol as a possible contributing factor in the crash but said speed is likely not a factor.
The crash is still under investigation.
