COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Colorado Springs police officer shot and killed a man after responding to a shots fired call in the 1700 block of Auburn Drive in the city Friday morning.
CSPD officers arrived and heard someone firing shots around 7:45 a.m. in his backyard. Police said the man leveled his gun at a home in the neighborhood. The officer shot the man as a result of being threatened, and the man was transported to a hospital, where he died.
"I'm going to be looking out the window more. I hate to be a snoop but I think it's more being protective," Ellen Dworak, a neighbor, said.
According to the El Paso County Assessor the home belongs to a Clifford R. Stahl, Stahl's father tells FOX21 his son hasn't lived in the house for six months, and neighors confirm that, saying his ex-wife and her boyfriend live there now.
Neighbors tell me this isn't the first time the police have been called to their block, so last summer 22 neighbors took action and started a neighborhood watch. Friday morning's shooting is a big reminder to stay alert.
"We've had a couple of drug busts in the neighborhood, it's been roughly a year-and-a-half," Rick Oveson, a neighbor, said.
The officer is on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete, which is department policy. Police said they don't know what started the incident. Detectives from the Homicide Unit will assist the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's Office with the investigation.
Police will not release the name of the victim or the officer at this time.
